Geographically St Petersburg is close to the North Pole. The city has the same latitude as part of Alaska and Greenland. St Petersburg presents similar weather conditions as many northern cities of Europe. Its climate is mostly mild and wet, and very variable. Winter. Winter is cold and very variable. Periods of low temperature (down to -12°C and even significantly lower down to -25C,-30 C) can be followed by warmer days with heavy snowfalls. If you visit St Petersburg in winter, pack up warm clothes and practical footwear, as the streets can get very slushy at times! Spring. Spring comes to the city unnoticed . Gradually days when the temperature does not go below 0 C get more and more frequent. The snow melts, roofs are dripping, and migrant birds appear. May is by far the most beautiful month of spring. In May the ice from the lake Ladoga drifts along the Neva, and by the end of the month leaves already appear on trees. Summer. Summer is warm, with short hot periods that do not last longer than a week. Rains and storms are frequent, so don’t forget to pack your umbrella. The most amazing summer month is June, as it offers these astounding White Nights when nighttime only lasts 30 to 50 minutes. During White Nights it is very pleasant to walk along the Neva embankments (the shortest river in Europe) and watch the opening of bridges. It is an unforgettable sight! Autumn. In September the weather is still warm. It is only at the beginning of October that the temperature slowly decreases, and by the end of the month the first frosts can already bite! Snow can sometimes make an appearance in November, but it remains quite rare. White nights. Symbol of St Petersburg - White Nights are an amazing phenomenon that can be explained by the city high latitude. White Nights start on 25-26th May when the evening twilight practically merges with the morning sunrise, and end on 16-17th July. Overall, White Nights last around 50 days.
